This volume deals with the question of the continuity of Latin literature throughout its history. For the first time, contributions are brought together from each of the three fields within the studies of Latin literature: Classical, Medieval and Neo-Latin, reflecting on problems such as the transmission of the Latin heritage, the creation and perpetuation of a classical normativeness and the reactions against it. The book is divided into three parts, corresponding to the theoretical principle of organic development: “Beginnings?”, “Perfections?”, “Transitions?”, thus questioning the validity of a similar evolutionistic model. Because of the numerous points of contact between Latin and the national literatures, the volume is of particular relevance for the studies of the European literary history. Contributors include: Davide Canfora, Perrine Galand-Hallyn, Sander Goldberg, Thomas Haye, Marc van der Poel, Michael Roberts, Francesco Stella, Wim Verbaal, Gregor Vogt-Spira, and Jan Ziolkowski.

This study focuses on ways in which Statius' epic Thebaid, a poem about the civil war between Oedipus' sons Eteocles and Polynices, reflects the theme of internal discord in its narrative strategies. At the same time that Statius reworks the Homeric and Virgilian epic traditions, he engages with Hellenistic poetic ideals as exemplified by Callimachus and the Roman Callimachean poets, especially Ovid. The result is a tension between the impulse towards the generic expectations of warfare and the desire for delay and postponement of such conflict. Ultimately, Statius adheres to the mythic paradigm of the mutual fratricide, but he continues to employ competing strategies that call attention to the fictive nature of any project of closure and conciliation. In the process, the poem offers a new mode of epic closure that emphasises individual means of resolution.

As one of the most prolific and influential scholars in the field, Thomas D. Hill has made an indelible mark on the study of Old English literature. In celebration of his distinguished career, the editors of Source of Wisdom have assembled a wide-ranging collection of nineteen original essays on Old English poetry and prose as well as early medieval Latin, touching upon many of Hill?s specific research interests.Among the topics examined in this volume are the Christian-Latin sources of Old English texts, including religious and ?sapiential? poetry, and prose translations of Latin writings. Old English poems such as Beowulf, The Dream of the Rood, and The Wife?s Lament are treated, throughout, to thematic, textual, stylistic, lexical, and source analysis. Prose writers of the period such as King Alfred and Wærferth, as well as medieval Latin writers such as Bede and Pseudo-Methodius are also discussed. As an added feature, the volume includes a bibliography of publications by Thomas D. Hill. Source of Wisdom is, ultimately, a contribution to the understanding of medieval English literature and the textual traditions that contributed to its development.

This volume is a collection of papers revealing the largely unexplored boundary between linguistic and literary approaches to classical texts. Eleven contributions by various scholars discuss a wide range of linguistic and literary aspects of classical texts: the narratee in the prologues of Sophocles’ Trachiniae and of Euripides, the chronology in Pindar’s Odes, the relation between tense-aspect and Discourse Modes in Thucydides, Xenophon, Vergil and Ovid, the use of aspect in the Law Code of Gortyn, expressions of futurity and the word order of adjectives in Herodotus, and, finally, ancient and modern views on word order. Following an interdisciplinary approach, all contributions aim at bridging the gap between linguistic and literary study of classical texts.
